Create a Notebook sleeve with your Foundation paper piece Quilt block

If you’ve ever finished a 6″ × 6″ foundation paper pieced quilt block and wondered what to do with it, this project is the perfect answer.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to turn that single block—featuring in this tutorial the LOVE IS IN THE AIR quilt block —into an adorable, quilted cover for a standard composition notebook. It’s a practical, beginner-friendly way to practice your FPP skills while creating something beautiful you’ll actually use (and probably want to show off, too!).

Materials/ fabrics needed:

Measurements

  • Cut (1) –  16″ x 11″ – Lining of notebook cover

  • Cut (2) –  6.5″ x 3″ – Top and bottom of quilt block

  • Cut (1) – 1.5″ x 11″ – Right side of quilt block strip

  • Cut (1) – 9.5″ x 11″ – Left side of quilt block

  • Cut (2) – 11″ x 11″ – Inside pockets Left and Right

Apply medium weight fusible interfacing to the back of all pieces of cotton fabric of fabric.

The measurements for this Notebook cover will fit a standard composition notebook.

Fold pockets in half with wrong sides together, top stitch along the fold of the fabric. (Press fabric beautifully)

Place pocketes on either side of the lining fabric, align the raw edges of the three sides of the pocket with the outer edge of the lining fabric. Baste your pockets into place if you feel the need too. (this will prevent them from shifting when you go to apply the exterior layer.

Prepare the front cover of your notebook sleeve.

Sew the top, bottom and side strip pieces to your quilt block with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Finish with the left side of cover to complete the full exterior fabric piece. Trim off excess fabric to the size of 16″ wide x 11″ tall.

Place the exterior fabric right sides down on the interior fabric and pocket pieces. Pin into place.

Place a 2.5″ spot at the bottom of the cover inbetween the pockets to be used to flip your fabric right sides out.

Sew all the way around with a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving that space.

Flip the book cover right sides out and give it a good press.

Turn in the raw edges of the hole and sew a quick top stitch or hand stitch the hole close with a matching thread.

Slip the book covers of your composition book into the sleeves of the book cover and your done!
