Things you will need for this tutorial
Cotton or Canvas fabric
Elastic or Fold over elastic (FOE)
Notebook you wish to put the holder on (for sizing)
Cut 2 pieces the height of your book by 3″ (My book was a standard size 8 1/2 x 10 so my pieces measured 10″ x 3″, Cut a shorter piece half the length of your longer pieces also 3″ wide (my pieces measure 5″ x 3″)
The short piece is the front of the slip pocket
Cut your elastic 1″ less the length of your longer pieces (my elastic would be 9″ in length since my larger pieces of fabric were 10″)
Take the shorter piece of fabric and fold down the short end 1/4″ – Iron to hold it in place, sew about 1″ away from the edge to create a hem
Lay the longer piece of fabric down with the right side facing up, place the elastic on top (if its a pretty elastic or has a shiny side have that side facing up) Place the elastic down with one edge of the elastic along the left side of the first piece of fabric, lay the pocket piece ontop with the wrong side facing up
This is a better view for you
place the last piece of fabric on top with the right side facing down
Sew along 3 edges leaving the one end open for turning
Flip the piece right side out and then sew down the middle of the fabric which will create 2 spots for 2 pens
Fold in the edges of the hole and slip the elastic in and sew the hole closed with a top stitch, continue to top stitch the entire piece and then your done!
Make one for each book, your text books – Great way to keep a highlighter on hand for your studying and great for the minimalist in you who hates to have to much bulk and a billion pens when your walking to class!
