How to make a mermaid sequin throw pillow

In this tutorial i will show you how to make this very easy mermaid sequin pillow

Before i made this pillow i couldnt help but think this would be a difficult thing. Will it break my machine?, is it easy? do i need a special tool for the sequins?

Follow this tutorial and with a few tips and tricks you will have a beautiful mermaid in a matter of a half hour

The fabric i used in this tutorial is at Joann Fabrics, it is holographic silver on one side and pink iridescent on the other side, I just want to add that this is the second sequin fabric i came come across and i am very happy with the quality at joann fabrics, its very smooth and easy to draw into, you can tell the difference between a cheap sequin and a quality

Telio Flashdance Sequin Mermaid Gold/Silver Fabric

For this pillow i chose to get polyester fiber fill as oppose to a pillow form, with the fill it doesnt matter what size you make your pillow but with a pillow form you will need to make a pillow case essentially that fits onto the form.

For this tutorial my throw pillow is  18″ x 18″

if you use a 18″ pillow form you will need to make your pillow case 19.3″ x 19.3″

**Protip – when cutting your fabric it is easier to cut the sequin fabric if your use masking tape and then you can draw on it the path you want to cut, and then when you remove the tape it will collect all the loose sequins saving you a big mess on your floor! haha

I chose to use Minky dot fabric for the back of my pillow, place right sides together and pin the heck out of it as the two fabrics together will slip and slide when sewing

use a nice big needle and using a new one would be ideal so its nice and sharp and easily pierces the sequins, these are the biggest ones i had but you can easily use a all purpose 14 or 16 gage needle

Sew all four sides leaving a 4 to 5 inch gap, when sewing the sequins lay them down in the direction you are sewing and it will help make it smoother when going through your machine

Snip the corners before turning so you can create a nice sharp corner

Fill with polyester fiber fill until the desired firmness

use a needle and tread and do an invisible stitch to close up the hole
