Top 8 Tools to buy when learning how to sew

New to sewing and not sure what all you need to get you started with your first sewing project? This post will be all my favourite beginner sewing tools and what i use behind the camera for my youtube videos
Online Sewing Class

Of course the first item on my list will be my “Holy Grail” my “baby” my most favourite sewing machine i have ever owned and that would be the Brother CP – 7500

I cant seem to find it for sale anywhere but i will link a very similar model

What i love about this sewing machine is 1. The drop down bobbin! this feature is worth its weight in gold, i cant tell you how frustrating the old style bobbin loaders can be especially when you are a beginner and just learning how to sew.

There are many “beginner” sewing machines on the market at walmart, joann fabrics but honestly spend a little bit more no more then 200-300 and it will bring down the frustration level a ton and as someone who has sewn for a long time i can tell you that if i had this sewing machine when i was a teen maybe i wouldnt have walked away in frustration as much, tension, bobbin gumming up, needles breaking in your face all these things that come with a poor quality machine. i almost thought about wearing safety goggles to sew!

2.

Next on my list is of course a pair of Scissors, in a perfect world i would suggest buying a good quailty in a lock box at the front of the store under lock and key but i know i cant afford those and as a beginner i would say just get a good enough for now pair. The scissors i got were around $30, take care of your scissors and they will last longer

How do you “take care” of your scissors?   for one Only cut fabric with them, if your kids steal your scissors hide them, put a lock through the handles to stop any little thief from using them

Cutting things such as paper, opening packages can all damage the blade and reduce the life

If you purchase a good quality pair of scissor you can sharpen them if you know how or take them to a tool-smith and they can sharpen you up

I like to have two types of scissors, my Fabric scissors and my “snips” for cutting away from the machine and snipping loose threads i like to have these as they are lighter and i can keep them right by my machine

3.

Next on my list would be of course a Stitch ripper, if your a beginner you will get to know your stitch ripper very very well.. so get a good one! I like to get a large one and a small one depending on your stitch length

4.

Next on my list would have to be Pins and or Clips

If your a beginner mommy sewer then you might stick with clips for fear of the kiddos getting a hold of the pins or loosing one on the floor and getting a happy surprise when your foot finds it… OUCH!

I like to have both because sometimes clips just wont cut it but when i do use my pins i count my pins and when im done i recount to make sure i put away the same amount, 10 pins come out 10 pins better go back in.

For the majority of most projects Clips will do just fine and are very safe especially for the little beginner sewer

5. Measuring tools

I always have a tape measure on hand but honestly i don’t use it much, i love my hard rulers i find they are more accurate for the projects i work on. if you are planning on getting into garment sewing then a tape measure is essential but if you are more into small projects such as the ones i feature on my youtube channel then a hard ruler with a metal edge is ideal

6. Marking tools

Marking tools are good to have on hand when cutting out a pattern you can draw it out, to mark centre points or to just draw your own. i like to use simple things such as chalk but i also have disappearing ink pens

7. Iron

I love my Iron and i use it all the time when i’m sewing, every time you purchase some new fabric you will need to prewash it, 1 because its dirty and 2 because some fabrics shrink and if you make something and then wash it afterwards it will shrink and misshape itself.  so if you purchase a lot of cotton like i do you will iron all your fabric once you take it out of the dryer. I’m going to link the iron i use but of course every Iron is subjective you might not like mine and i might not like yours, this one has been working for more then 10 years and i’m very happy with its longevity so far!

of course with every iron you will need an iron board and if you are not into ironing and don’t necessarily need a huge board i have a great tutorial on a table top ironing board where i show you how to make a quick board out of scrap wood and a staple gun.

8.

Another headache buster when your just starting to sew is buy some good thread, cheap thread will break and cause you unneeded frustration and believe me when your learning how to do something that is not what you need! The thread that i use it Guterman, pretty sure every store sells this brand it is a very popular brand and i have never had an issue  with the quality of this thread
